      <image:title>Projects by Sarah Bouchard - Corinthian Hall</image:title>
<image:caption>I first became interested in working within the Masonic Temple in downtown Portland, Maine, in 2009, while touring the building on behalf of a small non-profit arts organization that was seeking a public venue for its activities. Upon entering the building, I was blown away by the architectural grandeur of the space. As I moved through the rooms, I found myself hanging back to photograph individual spaces and remnants of rituals that had taken place the night before. I found the “otherness” of the building profoundly inspiring. Further research into the history of the Masonic Order revealed a strong emphasis on the pursuit of individual refinement. As a secret society that evolved from a stone masons’ guild into a philosophical order invested in the architecture of the human soul, the Masons had a documented history of their shift from physical to conceptual exploration. Utilizing the symbolism of the mason’s craft to identify the stages of psychic and spiritual growth, the Masonic Order developed a brotherhood among men that was intended to transcend the boundaries of race, creed and religion. <image:caption>Sketchbook: Pencil on Paper with Pencil on Vellum Overlay. 2011. In my first days making regular visits to the Temple, I spent the bulk of my time sketching Corinthian Hall. I was in awe of the space. I worked to envision an installation that would channel the energy of the room and the ritual activities that continue to take place within its walls.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects by Sarah Bouchard - The Eastern Star Hall: Studio Space</image:title>
<image:caption>To secure regular access to the Temple, I created an Artist-in-Residency program. I proposed that I be given studio space within the building, as well as a place to store the components for a large-scale installation to be mounted in the Corinthian Hall, the most significant ritual room of the Temple. After much consideration, the Masonic Trustees of Portland voted to give me use of the 5th floor of the Temple, which houses the Eastern Star Hall, and the Ladies Sitting Room. The Eastern Star Hall, pictured here, is the former ritual space of the women's strain of the Masonic Order.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects by Sarah Bouchard - Architectural Drawing + Collage</image:title>
<image:caption>Graphite and Paper on Architectural Vellum. When I first started working within the Temple, I was given access to photocopies of the original architectural plans for the building. They were in bad shape. As part of the process of "knowing" the space, I redrew the plans. These images combine those redrawn plans with cut paper elements depicting the full vision for the Masonic Temple project. The most expansive iteration of this project involves the creation of a massive nest, suspended in the Eastern Star Hall and hundreds of orbs positioned throughout key ritual spaces within the building. The orbs were to serve as a symbolic spreading of new life throughout the space. I also proposed creating an audio component to guide visitors throughout the building, fusing current facts with a fabricated soundscape, to share a sense of the Temple at the height of its activity. With this audio piece, visitors may have entered a room to find themselves "interrupting" a ritual, or encountering a flurry of Masons descending the stairs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>House Paint on Canvas. 8" x 8" Canvases placed in an 89" x 89" grid. 2016.   100 Whites began as a playful piece inspired by the absurd experience of searching through Home Depot's paint collection trying to match a “white” paper sample, only to find they have 1,100 whites. The piece quickly evolved into a fierce exploration of whiteness, color, and race in America - a question continuously shaped by current events and impacted through podcasts, news updates, and heated conversations. <image:title>Projects by Sarah Bouchard - Ladder Definition</image:title>
<image:caption>For a Critics Choice exhibition organized by Maine art critic Daniel Kany, I exhibited a re-imagined interpretation of white cube, focusing on a single ladder component and consisting of one white ladder on a pedestal, a life-size image of a white ladder taken in my studio, a drawing of white cube, and a printed definition of the word ladder. The piece was playing off of Joseph Kosuth's One and Three Chairs. 2014</image:caption>

<image:title>White Cube - white cube (72 free-standing ladders)</image:title>
<image:caption>white cube is a site-specific installation originally created for the Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art. The piece is comprised of 72 free-standing ladders, created by hand and individually positioned to form a 48” x 48” x 48” white cube. The piece references The White Cube by Ilya Kabokov and contributes to the artistic dialogue sparked by Brian O’Doherty’s pivotal text “Inside the White Cube: The Ideology of the Gallery Space.” white cube appears from one vantage point to be a solid cube, but circumnavigation reveals negative space, changing gradations of light, repetitions of form, and a reframing of the works and space outside the cube in multiple variations. Symbolically, the ladder references hierarchical structure, and signifies an individual’s quest to attain higher levels of consciousness.</image:caption>

      <image:title>White Cube - Ladder Definition</image:title>
<image:caption>For a Critics Choice exhibition organized by Maine art critic Daniel Kany, I exhibited a re-imagined interpretation of white cube, focusing on a single ladder component and consisting of one white ladder on a pedestal, a life-size image of a white ladder taken in my studio, a drawing of white cube, and a printed definition of the word ladder. The piece was playing off of Joseph Kosuth's One and Three Chairs. 2014</image:caption>

<image:caption>Digital C-Prints mounted on wood blocks. 4" x 4". 2014. In Ethical Know-How: Action, Wisdom and Cognition, Francisco J. Varela writes, “Reality is not a given: it is perceiver-dependent, not because the perceiver ‘constructs’ it as he or she pleases, but because what counts as a relevant world is inseparable from the structure of the perceiver.” Our inner structure, the quality of our minds, the way we see the world, literally determines our experience of value and alters how we engage with the world. We determine what “counts,” and build upon that determination throughout our lives.</image:caption>

She holds back her secrets until one is fit to be entrusted with them, lest by rashness they destroy themselves. Those who seek, find, not because the truth is far off, but because the discipline of the quest makes them ready for the truth, and worthy to receive it. By a certain sure instinct the great teachers of our race have regarded the highest truth less as a gift bestowed than as a trophy to be won. Everything must not be told to everybody. Truth is power, and when held by untrue hands it may become a plague.” - Joseph Fort Newton, The Builders: A Story and Study of Freemasonry</image:caption>

      <image:title>Exhibitions - Circle Drawing</image:title>
<image:caption>Graphite on Vellum. 8" x 8". 2012. Circle Work was born from a desire to draw the perfect circle. By developing focus on a single form, I sought to train my hand and mind. The work was intended as a way to strive for perfection while simultaneously learning to embrace human limitations, eventually developing an experience of perfection within imperfection. This process may be referenced historically to Robert Irwin’s use of one-pointed focus. By focusing on a single form, the creative act is melded with meditative discipline. Each drawing is created on a square of vellum, playing with the alchemical concept of squaring the circle. While the circle is considered a symbol of divine perfection, eternity and psychic wholeness, the square represents the earth, the physical body and reality. The combination of these two forms demonstrates a striving for the experience of perfection grounded in the reality of imperfect existence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>House Paint on Canvas. 8" x 8" Canvases placed in an 89" x 89" grid. 2016. 100 Whites began as a playful piece inspired by the absurdity of searching through Home Depot's paint collection looking for “white” only to find they have 1,100 whites. The piece quickly evolved into a fierce exploration of whiteness, color, and race in America - a question continuously shaped by current events and impacted through podcasts, news updates, and heated conversations. What is white?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Past: process - Circle Drawing</image:title>

      <image:title>Masonic Temple - Corinthian Hall</image:title>
<image:title>Masonic Temple - The Eastern Star Hall: Studio Space</image:title>

<image:caption>Pencil on Vellum with Glue. 9" x 14". 2015. Phase Two of the Masonic Temple Project involves the creation of a large, 13' diameter nest to be suspended or placed in the central area of the Eastern Star Hall. Bees and the hive have long been symbols of industry and regeneration within the Masonic Order. When seeking a place to start a new colony, the queen bee seeks out an unused, low traffic space to lay her eggs. Tucked away on the fifth floor of Portland's downtown Masonic Temple, the Eastern Star Hall is the former ritual space for the women's strain of the Masonic Order. <image:title>Masonic Temple - Architectural Drawing + Collage</image:title>
